Preparing your home

Your home does not have to be perfect. I promise. It’s your home and it’s supposed to look lived in, and if you have little ones, it's VERY MUCH well lived in. So, no need to worry about that. You also don’t have to hire a professional cleaner before your session or redecorate the living room; I’m there to focus on you and the interactions with your new baby/children.

Instead, focus on uncluttering your home which means just tidying up a bit (like no coats on couch or towels on bed sort of thing) and just toss the rest in a closet until I leave. Give maybe a wipe to your windows or mirrors because I might use them and streaks or dust on these surfaces can be very obvious in images.

Putting on the heat can be to your advantage to make the baby feel warm and happy.

About 30 minutes before the session or before the baby naps, loosen the baby’s nappy to allow time for the nappy’s imprint marks to disappear. Also remove any tight clothing that could leave marks on the skin. If your baby’s skin is a little dry or flaky, try applying a small bit of baby lotion to those spots the day before our session.

Gather all the items you want to use during the session beforehand, such as blankets or soft toys. We will review them together to determine what and how we can use the items in your session. I also have in my possession a client wardrobe and materials that you can use during the session.

Natural Lighting is the key

Most homes will not have a lot of natural light flooding in. The key is to have areas set up with windows in mind! Do you have a favourite rocking chair and a nice plant?

Have it position near a window (of course it would be temporarily).

A big help would be to pull back all the curtains and open those shades. Let's that sunshine in!

If you are not sure which areas in your home you want to shoot in, you can send me pictures of your home and I will give you advice or move things around with your approval of course.

Preparing your little ones

This is so important, probably the number one! Do not tell your little ones that I’m coming over to take their photos and that they need to stay still and do as they're told while I’m there. They will hate that, and you can see it during the session. No smile, no emotions, they will be so bored. Instead, tell them that I am coming to have a lot of fun with them, that I want to see their favourite things, and see what they like to do with mummy and daddy. I will also ask them to see their best cuddles and kisses, and you will see some really genuine smiles and laughter (without telling them to smile!). Those are the moments you will cherish forever.

From this session, think If there is something that you love to do as a family or that your little ones can’t get enough of, let me know and let's include those things into your session, it will make your images that much more special and meaningful for you to look back on in the years to come. e.g. a favourite book, helping in the kitchen, special song, a dance, a game, old picture to look at that amazes them, etc..
